Corps History

On the 28th October 1664 by order of King Charles II the Royal Marines were formed but then they were named The Duke of York and Albany’s Maritime Regiment of Foot.

This is the badge of a Royal Regiment.

Awarded By King George III in 1802

Gibraltar

 

Commemorates the siege and capture of the rock of Gibraltar in 1704.

Globe

 

Granted by King George IV in 1827 to replace the many battle honours.

Laurel Wreath

 

Awarded for gallantry at the battle of Belle Isle 1761.

Fouled Anchor

 

This is the crest of the Lord High Admiral first worn in 1747.

Representing the Naval connection.

Corps Moto

 

Per Mare Per Terram in English means by sea by land.

First used after the battle of Bunker Hill 1775.

Navy Blue: Represents Connection with the Royal Navy (4 parts)

Old Gold: The first tunic colour (1 part)

Light Infantry Green: Commemorates the Royal Marines Light Infantry (RMLI) (1 Part)

Drummer Red: Tunic colur until 1876 (2 Parts)
